Microsoft enters the Anti-Spyware Market

Along with the security threat from viruses, spyware is now becoming a great threat too.

Spyware relates to any software that has installed itself onto your computer with unwanted or even malicious purpose. These range from additional browser toolbars which look like a handy tool, but have the side effect of popping-up advert web pages, to the very nasty dialers which will cause your computer to dial premium rate phone lines, giving you a phone bill of hundreds of pounds!

In order to avoid the inconvenience and harm of spyware, an anti-spyware utility on your computer is becoming very important.

Until recently there was a huge range of anti-spyware packages, some good, some not so good, but no clear winner. However, with Microsoft's entry into the sector, the choice of the prefered package becomes clear.

At the moment the product is a beta test release (ie not a finshed product) and as such it is available for free. However, even in its present unfinished state, it is a very polished and stable product. It is not yet clear if this will be a free product, or how much it will cost when the final version is released. In the meantime, it is well worth trying out.

To download your free version of Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta, go to http://download.microsoft.com/ and look for the link under the Popular Downloads heading.
